Eltham Palace
A mid-century musing
Upon arrival to the palace, cascading castle walls amidst great forestry are outlaid all just behind a modern day mixture of homes and businesses, providing a quick read and intriguing insight into the history of the hallowed hall.
Eltham Palace was constructed in the 14th century and utilized by nobility, British hierarchy and celebrity alike. Originally a palace, it was destroyed almost entirely in the British civil war and slowly rebuilt over the following centuries, with it’s most token transformation having taken place in the 1930’s.
The house and hall is a seemingly uncoordinated conglomeration of art deco, mid-century and traditional castle design. It’s great hall holds true to it’s ancient history and famed past while the main housing is home to a distinct design array of art deco. From wood paneling containing the richest of artwork inlaid to a vast array of velvets covering a multitude of surfaces, Eltham is unlike any palace in Britain, and its history is as vibrant as its design.
